Family business adopts penguins to join its ele-friend

Date published: 14 September 2023

A family-run construction business is supporting next summer’s art trail in Worcester after buying one of the city’s elephants at auction in 2021.

S.E Davis & Son Ltd, proud owners of ‘Lucy Lavender’ the elephant, is joining the great Waddle of Worcester by sponsoring an adult and a baby penguin.

Two of eighty sculptures which will brighten city streets and public spaces, the large penguins will later be sold at auction to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

The Astwood Bank-based company’s penguin chick will be designed and decorated by children from a local primary school.

Sue Davis, Director of S.E Davis & Son Ltd, said: “Family is at the heart of everything we do here so we’re excited to be playing a part in an event which will bring smiles to so many, including our own loved ones and extended work family.

“We loved the giraffes in 2018 and were lucky to secure an elephant at auction in 2021, which sits proudly in our offices. Becoming a sponsor this year is another way for us to support the hospice and the amazing care the team provides to local people.”

The trail begins on Monday, 22 July and runs for eight weeks until Sunday, 15 September 2024.

Sara Matthews, Business Development Manager for St Richard’s Hospice, said: “It’s lovely to be reunited with ‘Lucy Lavender’, the elephant, who looked beautiful beside the Cathedral during Worcester’s Big Parade.

“We’re so grateful to everyone at S.E Davis & Son for their continuing support as sculpture owner and now sponsor. Our care simply wouldn’t be possible without the backing of our fantastic local community.”

Forty baby penguins are available for adoption by local schools and community groups. Any schools or group interested must register for a place in a penguin chick draw which closes at 5pm on Friday 15 September. See our Schools page.
