Penguin App to showcase the wonders of Worcester

Date published: 23 July 2024

Visitors taking part in this summer’s penguin trail around Worcester can track their route and learn more about the city via a new app.

The great Waddle of Worcester app, sponsored by local healthcare manufacturer Kimal, maps the locations of all 80 penguins which are bringing a splash of colour to city streets and open spaces until 15 September.

A Wild in Art trail being brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice, the app launch follows the success of a similar offering for Worcester’s Big Parade in 2021.  That app saw more than 220,000 visits to sculptures recorded and over 2,500 selfies uploaded to its gallery by trail goers.

Sara Matthews, Business Development Manager for St Richard’s Hospice, said: “It’s wonderful to see trail goers waddling in Worcester for our third – and biggest – art trail in the city.

“The app is a really great way to discover the sculptures – as you get facts about each penguin and artist, alongside unlocking information about the city too.

“One of the things we most loved about our previous elephant and giraffe trail apps was seeing all the happy selfies meeting our herds.  Please do upload your ‘pen-grins’ this year – we’d love to see them!”

Matthew Press, CEO for Kimal, said: “As a Worcestershire company with a locally-based team, we’re very proud to have a Kimal penguin waddling in Worcester this summer.  These art trails bring such a buzz to the county and we’re delighted to be playing our part.

“The app is a fantastic way for families, friends and colleagues to track their way around the city so we’re really delighted to be sponsoring this opportunity and, in turn, supporting the care that St Richard’s Hospice provides to so many local people and their loved ones.”

The app costs £1.99 and is available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Trail maps are available from Worcester Tourist Information Centre, St Richard’s Hospice shops and the trail’s pop-up shop at 14 Chapel Walk, Crowngate Shopping Centre. Sticker books, official merchandise and penguin-themed goodies lovingly handcrafted by hospice supporters, are available at the trail’s pop-up shop too.
