Petr Horacek

Petr Horáček is an award-winning picture book writer and illustrator. He was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia and now lives in Worcester. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Art in Prague and graduated in 1994.

Petr has written and illustrated many books for children. In the UK he is mainly published by Walker Books and his books are translated into many languages. Petr has won awards for his books in Britain, USA and Holland.

40. The Quay (Bishop’s Palace)

Overlooking this portion of the river is the ancient Bishop’s Palace. The land on which it was built was first granted to the Bishops of Worcester by Aethelred and Aethelflaed, Lord and Lady of Mercia early in the 10th century. Aethelflaed was the daughter of Alfred the Great.

40. The Quay (Bishop’s Palace)

The Palace has hosted 3 royal visits. In 1575 Queen Elizabeth I stayed with her council in the palace. In 1687 James II, younger brother of Charles II who had fought for his father’s crown in the city stayed and in 1788 George III stayed with his family whilst attending the Three Counties Music Festival.

During WWII the palace was let to the Ministry of Works and today forms offices of the local Diocese.

In October 2024 all 40 large penguins and one chick will be auctioned to raise funds for the care provided by St Richard’s Hospice.

In 2021, 31 stunning elephant sculptures raised a mammoth £368,800 to support the care provided by St Richard’s Hospice across Worcestershire.
